THE DIP TURNS 1

Do The Dip! by Levins on Mixcloud

Hey so that restaurant I opened with my girlfriend is still open after a whole year and we are doing birthday things like having a hot wing competition and selling deep fried cupcakes all week. Check out the bday vibes.
I made this mix to celebrate our birthday, it’s a collection of Miami Bass tunes with a smattering of other up tempo rap hits from the 80s and 90s. Perfect for doing the dip to.

HALFWAY CROOKS APRIL SCANDAL

MY INCREDIBLE EVENT BLURB FOR THE NEXT HALFWAY CROOKS PARTY WAS DEEMED “TOO REAL” BY ONE OF MY “BUSINESS ASSOCIATES” AND I WAS FORCED TO CENSOR MYSELF FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY FACEBOOK BLURB WRITING CAREER. MAYBE HE THOUGHT THE BABY BASH REFERENCE WOULD TURN PEOPLE AWAY AND “DAMAGE” OUR “BRAND”, I DUNNO. HERE IT IS FOR THE PUBLIC TO CHERISH AND PASS ON FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. WAS IT A TOTAL BRAND DAMAGER? I’LL LET THE FUTURE DECIDE.

Halfway Crooks is back like that herpes you got last year. That special herpes that played all those cool rap songs and made you dance so much that you almost forgot about how itchy you were. You bought all that topical ointment and applied it liberally on all your crevices and sure you looked a lot prettier without all that rash on your face but damn if you didn’t miss the good times you and your herpes used to have. You still flick through the pages of the scrapbook you kept while you and your herpes were together and struggle to hold back the tears. Yeah your friends didn’t approve of him but fuck your friends they don’t know the real you. You’re a party animal. A real maniac on the dancefloor. You might be doing well at your new job with only a few more months left of your masters degree but deep down all you can think of is your old mate herpes sprinting down your hallway, kicking the door in while holding a boombox over his head, blaring “Baby I’m Back” by Baby Bash featuring Akon. You always loved that song, especially the hook. You remember when everyone was mad at Akon for throwing a kid or something and how they overcame their hatred and learnt to accept Akon for who he was. You wonder if the world is ready for herpes again as he reaches for your laptop and clicks “attending” on this Halfway Crooks event. “See you there, herpes” you laugh. “I hope they play Niggas In Paris”.

HALFWAY CROOKS 3RD BIRTHDAY

Come celebrate THREE YEARS OF WAVINESS next Saturday 10 March, when HALFWAY CROOKS turns THREE. That’s right, THREE long years of being a hip hop party for party people.

It brings a tear to my eye to think about that first party. Things were so different back then. We called Toni Toni Lee “Spruce Lee”, we called Levins “Sleater Brockman” and we called The Bright’n Up Bar “home”.

I remember the crazy things we said before that first party. “We will only play classic hip hop and no new Southern shit” said Franco. “I’m not on Twitter yet!” said Elston. “I don’t know how to DJ!” said Levins.

Some 30 parties later and Halfway Crooks has become an Australian hero, dominating the charts and bringing home 94 consecutive number one singles worldwide. We won the Olympics, the Oscars and World War 2.

In the 3 years since our first party, Halfway Crooks has brought peace to Planet Pit, illegalized cancer and said no to breakdancing. We starred in 3 seasons of Blue Heelers Reloaded and successfully marketed Coke Zero to most of Europe.

We’ve gold plated our teeth, sold our hair to Africa and made a robot version of Dan Akroyd and now it’s time to let our fucking hair down and pop a few fucking bottles of whatever cheap Cristal knockoff they sell behind the bar at Phoenix.

That’s right mates it’s Halfway Crooks’s 3rd birthday and we’re hear to kick you in the face and tell you how much you liked getting kicked in the face by us.

Captain Franco, Levins and Toni Toni Lee are leaving the safety of their palaces and heading down to Phoenix to celebrate the gift of life with you, the people. And they’ve invited a couple of GOATs to join them.

For the first time, Halfway Crooks welcomes our guest DJs Radge, Leon Smith and Joyride as they join our crusade to play hip hop music for party people.

Get there early because this one’s gonna be a reeeeeeaallll ball shaker.

TURN UP YOUR STEREO – AUSTRALIA DAY MIX

LEVINS – TURN UP YOUR STEREO! | AUSTRALIA DAY MIX FOR ACCLAIM

Happy Australia Day! I’ve been feeling fairly un-patriotic ever since my final laser session removed all traces of the Southern Cross tattoos on my neck, lower back and left buttock so I thought I’d put something super Oztrayan together to re-pledge my allegiance. Something that really puts the third ‘Aussie’ in ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie’ and the second ‘Oi’ in ‘Oi Oi Oi’. I needed to take a little trip back though, to a time where almost all the music I listened to was local produce, and boy oh boy did I fuckin’ love that shit. I’m talking about high school, which for me was 1997 – 2002. Instead of studying for 4 Unit English or hitting on girls you could catch me spending all my time listening to triple j on my ghettoblaster, my fingers patiently hovering over the red record button, ready to capture my new favourite songs from The Jebs, The ‘Spoon or The ‘Gurge so I could learn all the words before I saw them play at the all ages festival at St Ives skate park that weekend, where I’d be pretending that the 10 dexies my friend had stolen from his brother with ADD and shoved down my throat had really got me fucked up (they hadn’t).

This mix is a tribute to those days. If you went back in time and stole all my cassettes out of that walkman I won from the MS Read-A-Thon, they would probably sound exactly like this mix, except luckily bloody Tunny isn’t yammering over the top of all the tracks in my mix. I tried to include as many of my favourite songs from that era, all of them Australian. There are some glaring omissions but hey this was super fun to do so I’ll probably put together another volume for the next patriotic public holiday (Easter? Jesus was a digger right?).

Spray some water on your stereo and turn it up loud. Sing along to the songs you know and pray that Quan and Janet get back together one day. Explain to a younger cousin what Recovery was and pretend you never saw Garage Days. Happy Australia day mates. PS thanks heaps to @bobbygelato for drawing that amazing artwork on his computer machine!

SOME MORE WORDZ

Last month I was asked by Alex at Acclaim Magazine (who is awesome fyi) to put together an all-Australian mix for Australia Day. My first thought was to put something together of all the recent releases from young electronic Australian producers but that mix would probably just be Jonti’s recent free album with the tracks in a different order, so I needed to come up with a better idea. Obviously that idea was to go BACK IN TIME.

I was a huge fan of the Radio Friendly Unit Shifter mixes that Nick Catchdubs put together with Mr Ducker for Mishka NYC. If you haven’t heard these amazing tributes to alternative music in the 90’s listen to all three of them now! They’re a fantastic, well mixed collection of time capsules to a better time (for ‘alternative music’ anyway, when was the last time you even heard that term?!).

After listening to those mixes some hundred times each, I wanted to do an all 90s Australian mix in a similar style. Catchdubs had represented the American side super well, even delved into some UK shit but understandably there was not one Aussie song on any of the mixes. So I had to do my part for my country. Half my favourite songs from that era are from 2000 – 2002 (the final two years of my high school xxxperience) so I had to extend the timeframe a little.

I put together a list of 150 songs that I loved back then and set out on a pretty impossible task of actually finding half of them. So many brilliant old Australian record labels have no presence whatsoever on the internets, many of them just exist as text on a Discogs page, with nowhere to buy their back catalogue. It’s easier to find videos of their artists performing on Recovery on YouTube than it is to find the songs they’re performing.

After raiding my old CD collection at my parents’ house (shouts out to them for not throwing it out yet) and bugging some pals at triple j to raid the music library for me, I had a pretty great collection of old Aussie gold / gold Aussie olds. So here are 26 of those songs, all mixed, just in time for Australia Day (happy that, by the way).

NO HANDS

Me and my pal Leon Smith started a party at Bada Bing, the strip club in Kings Cross. Leon DJs there 3 nights a week and convinced me to go there once for a few drinks. Upon getting there I realised that all Leon does is play my fav kind of rap for hours and hours surrounded by girls. I asked if I could get myself a small slice of that delicious pie and surprisingly Leon said yes. Thus, ‘No Hands’, our monthly Sunday night joint, was born.

It’s happening again this Sunday night, if you need a taste of what to expect Leon recorded our sets from last month! have a listen here!

See you at The Bing!

YO MELBY
