To celebrate, I put together a list of my favourite R&B songs from the last ten years for Oyster Magazine. Read the whole list here!

HALFWAY CROOKS 4TH BIRTHDAY

I don’t know if you’ve read the newspapers lately but they are all talking about one thing: 4 years of Halfway Crooks.

I know what you’re thinking – can a newspaper talk? And to that I answer yes, and they can beatbox. But this is not a place to discuss the vocal talents of newspapers, we’re here to talk about 4 long years of rap parties for party people.

Halfway Crooks began in a barn on Oxford St called Bright’n Up Bar. 3 local farmers had been harvesting some fine rap produce their whole lives and decided it was time to share their crops with the good public. These handsome farmers were Franco, Elston and Levins.

A predominantly east coast farmer, “Captain” Franco had spent most of his life ploughing the fields of ‘real hip hop’. He would plant seeds from all the elements and share the fruits of his labour with his flock of kosher pigs.

On the west side of town, Elston had a much more laidback approach to farming. Specialising in the greenest, stickiest crops, Elston would supply his organic soulful produce to all the fine lady farmers in the land.

Finally, way down South, there was Levins, a farmer whose IQ was dangerously high and who was frequently described as “very kool 4 a dad”. Displaying little skill on the 1’s and 2’s, Levins made up for it with frequent harvests of waviness.

After noticing a gap in the market, the 3 farmers got together to start a new evening to share their combined goods. They called this evening Halfway Crooks and it was an instant success, making the 3 of them household names and the constant front cover stars of the esteemed “Rappy Farmers Weekly”. After a year of running Halfway Crooks, they had to expand their operation to a much bigger barn – Phoenix, which they have called their home and filled to the brim each month for the last 3 years.

So get your flock together, put on your finest overalls and come celebrate 4 years of incredible rap produce at Halfway Crooks 4th Birthday at Phoenix on Saturday the 6th of April – which also happens to be Levins’ birthday! Bring him a present and maybe he won’t hold up a giant ‘NO’ in your face when you request a song.

ADAM

Soul crushingly awful tit-jizz scenes aside, Adam is easily my favourite character on Girls. I would thoroughly enjoy a Girls spin off series featuring Adam called BRO.

CIARA – BODY PARTY

Four reasons why Ciara’s new single Body Party is the song of the day:

1. Ciara co-wrote this with Future. They are dating. I am almost as stoked about their relationship as I was when Beck dated Winona Ryder for a week when I was in high school.

2. Mike Will produced it, making this one of at least five amazing tracks he’s already put out this year (most of the others were on Future’s Freeband Gang: The Movie tape).

3. Body Party samples one of the greatest songs of all time, My Boo by Ghost Town DJ’s, reworking the opening line into the chorus. This song was also used to great effect in the remix of Mariah Carey’s H.A.T.E.U. Cool story: Kanye West visited a store that my sister was working in a few years ago while she was playing My Boo on the stereo. He shouted at her “THIS IS EVERY GIRLS FAVOURITE SONG HUH!” before buying every pair of pants in the store and turning them into a necklace.

4. THIS SONG IS CALLED BODY PARTY! I’M HAVING A BODY PARTY RIGHT NOOOOOOWWWW.

NEW MIX: 2 MILLION IQ

Good news! I made a sequel to my WILDLY SUCCESSFUL 1 Million IQ mix from earlier in the  year. It features almost 20 triumphant jams that have been proven to increase your IQ in a very cool way. DINER / PHOTOBOMB UPDATE

Hey so my book Diner is out! Did you read about it yet?

One crushing piece of feedback that I keep getting is that there aren’t enough photos of me in the book! To help rectify this situation I have put together this sheet of stickers of me for you to photobomb all your favourite recipes with!

The stickers are free when you buy a copy of Diner from The Dip. The stickers will also be coming away with me on tour at my launch parties in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide! Those dates will be announced in the next few days!

I WROTE A COOKBOOK

Hi, welcome to another instalment of THINGS I DID.

One night in late September last year I had just finished DJing at Goodgod. I was sweaty and the dulcet tones of R Kelly were ringing in my ears. A lady approached me and instead of congratulating me for what was surely the best DJ set she’d ever heard, she told me she liked The Dip and that she wanted me to write a book for her. ‘Of course!’ I exclaimed, thrusting a business card into her hand before I made my way to the bar and forgot what a book was forever.

The next week I received an email from this lady and she was legit! She wanted me to write a cookbook for her – in 3 months! So I didn’t write shit for two and half of them, then stayed up till 6am every night for 2 weeks writing what would become Diner, a book coming out TOMORROW.

Diner features pretty much all the recipes for the dishes I serve every night at The Dip – pulled pork, hot dogs, burgers, nachos etc – plus a stack of recipes I used to cook at all the wild BBQs I used to host before we opened The Dip. Really fun recipes that are good for parties, groups or just being a fat glorious turd by yourself.

So I’m an author now! What a slashie asshole I’ve become. You can pick up Diner at bookstores WORLDWIDE or order it online at Amazon or Book Depository. We’ll also be selling it at The Dip with a special something that you only get it you buy it from us!

I’ll be going on tour next month doing launches in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide where I’ll be DJing, cooking and signing books! Triple threat! I’ll be putting these dates up here in the next week so stay tuned! It would be good to see some cool people like you there being cool like you always are. Also if you’re overseas and think I should come there maybe I will!

Please buy my book. I would love some of your money.

DINNERTIME

A few years ago I wrote about going to Wilcannia for the first time. It was a quick visit but I managed make a sweet little song/video and made several efforts to return.

I’ve been to Wilcannia with Heaps Decent twice so far this year. We received a grant to fund six more visits over the next 18 months which is fantastic. We work with the public school, the drop in centre and, for the first time, a primary school. You can read more about our first Wilcannia trip this year here.

We usually work with young people between 15 and 20 at Heaps Decent so working with primary school kids was quite a change. After two visits we have eight songs that wouldn’t sound out of place on Sesame St. In our workshops get the kids to come up with a subject then we help them write quick, simple verses. We sampled them playing percussive instruments they had in their classroom and made a beat out of it. The finished songs are cute, fun and educational!

After our first trip we got back to Sydney and one song, Dinnertime, stood out as the strongest. I asked my friend Georgia Perry to animate a clip for the song which you can watch at the top of this post. When we returned to Wilcannia last month we played the kids at St Therese’s the animated video and they watched attentively, singing the lyrics in unison as they flashed on the screen in time to the music. I filmed their reaction to the video, it was priceless. Made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. We’ll be making a lot of songs like this in the future, please share this video around. If you’ve got kids show it to them.

NEW MIX: 1 MILLION IQ

I made a new mix of all YUNG/DUMB/FUN rap anthems that I have been listening to a shitload of lately. A couple of years ago Rico Uno and Eric Devereaux did an amazing mix for Mad Decent of this kinda shit and this is kinda similar. It’s a mix of new and less new (the oldest song here is about 3 years old), mostly from Atlanta, mostly by young ass dudes. I ripped a few of these joints off youtube, these kids couldn’t be more than 13 years old!

Anyway I’m probably gonna do a few of these over the next year because it’s my favourite shit coming out at the moment. There are a few rappers on here a few times (Young Thug rightfully features three times!) and most of the production is by DJ Spinz, K.E. On The Track and London On Da Track. Naturally I had to get Wavey Davey B to do the best intro/outro that he’s done for me yet (shout out to his wife too!). The dude Bobby Gelato did the fine artwork.

Sooooo… please enjoy 1 MILLION IQ!
