It Takes A Muscle is by far my favourite track on M.I.A.’s new album ///Y/. I didn’t realise it was a cover straight away though, and after hearing the original I feel silly for not blasting it for the last ten years, it’s a really great song.

PS. I know the reasons behind them not working together more are personal, but surely for the sake of great music it makes sense for Diplo to produce more of M.I.A.’s albums. My most played song on Arular was the Diplo produced Bucky Done Gun, likewise he produced Paper Planes, my favourite tune on Kala. He produced It Takes A Muscle too. Why didn’t he just do the whole album?

NEW MIX: YO LEVINS x FAVELA ROCK

I made this for a party I played in Melbourne last weekend called Favela Rock. My friends Evet and Will of Opulent have been running this party for about as long as I’ve been DJing. Me and Spruce Lee made a mix for one of their first parties (If anyone wants to hear that I’ll upload it!) so it was cool to make another mix for them last week.

This is a pretty all over the place mix, Evet’s girlfriend Lucy said it was “really weird…in a good way…I think” which is about as good of an endorsement that I could ever hope for. Please enjoy.

HEAPS DECENT REMIX COMPETITION

HEAPS DECENT REMIX COMPETITION w/ MAD DECENT

from the Mad Decent blog

Earlier in the year Heaps Decent worked on a project called Detours and Destinations. With partners Shopfront Contemporary Arts Centre, Juvenile Justice and The Sydney Opera House, Heaps Decent visited two schools in areas of Sydney that had a high percentage of young people in juvenile detention. Over 3 months we ran music and video workshops and produced 4 songs from those workshops featuring the young people singing and rapping. We then put on an exhibition at The Sydney Opera House that allowed an audience to interact with the songs with a dancefloor that worked as a controller for the music. It was a huge project with some great results!

We’re now looking to release an EP of the songs we made, along with some video clips AND some remixes of the songs by some friends of Heaps Decent. We have one song left to remix and we thought we’d make the call out here to see what you guys can come up with!

The song we want you to remix is called “Lomandra Crew.” It was made by a group of students at Lomandra High School in Campbelltown. They wrote the lyrics with us and helped us produce the beat too. The final song was arranged by Adam Bozzetto.

The original track can be heard HERE.

Below are the parts for the remix, the winner gets their remix on the Detours & Destinations release and a shiny new Apogee One, the soundcard we use to record at all Heaps Decent workshops!  Thanks to Apogee for providing the prize!

HEAPS DECENT REMIX CONTEST

HEAR ME ON JAILBREAK TONIGHT

heapsdecent:

Levins will be a guest on tonight’s Jailbreak on Sydney radio station 2ser.

Jailbreak gives a voice to prison inmates, their families and friends, providing information on criminal, prison and health issues as well as connecting prisoners to the community through their music, poetry, views and health messages.

Levins will be sharing stories from Heaps Decent’s Juvenile Justice Workshops over that last 3 years and playing some songs created in the workshops over the half hour program.

You can tune in from 6:30 – 7:00pm on 2ser 107.3 FM or stream it on the 2ser website. We’ll try to make the show available for download later in the week.

TRIPLE DUDE STACK

So We Love Sounds was last weekend. I didn’t go but here’s a photo I took at last years festival of a truly sweet TRIPLE DUDE STACK!

GENERIC PARTY NEXT FRIDAY!

Next Friday night I’ll be joining some good friends at The Civic and playing the Generic Collective‘s first birthday, headlined by Renaissance Man.

I played the first Generic party last year and have supported the crew ever since. They are good boys putting on a party with a killer lineup, come show some support!

HOLY HEART ATTACK BATMAN

I just made this for lunch (aka late brunch). I wanted to submit it to This Is Why You’re Fat but the site is down! Whyyyyyyy?

sandwichface:

Eggs, bacon, avocado, fried tomato and Louisiana red chilli hot sauce on French sourdough. Made by Levins.

This sandwich was made on two frog in the holes. Levins made them like this:

  1. cut a circle out of each slice of bread with a water glass
  2. heat up a fry pan with a little butter
  3. put the bread in the pan an crack an egg in each hole
  4. let them cook then flip
  5. they’re ready when both sides are brown!

Levins fried the little holes of bread too- buttering both sides first. YUM they were super moist and buttery, almost like biscuits. Really good with the hot sauce.

I got Levins the Louisiana hot sauce from the USA foods website. They sell heaps of mad American foods that are hard to find here and postage is pretty reasonable.
